ABOUT

The Players’ was founded in 1936 by Leonard Sachs and Peter Ridgeway and has been presenting a modern representation of Victorian Music Hall ever since.

For 57 years we had residency at The Players’ Theatre in Villiers Street off The Strand underneath Charing Cross Station in London with many famous faces including Peter Ustinov, Hattie Jacques, Bill Owen, Clive Dunn and Maggie Smith.

Between 1953 and 1983 The Players’ featured in 245 television episodes of the BBC series ‘The Good Old Days’ from The City Varieties, in Leeds which was broadcast on a Saturday night. Each episode was wonderfully chaired by Leonard Sachs and included many regulars such as Tessie O'Shea, Roy Castle, Roy Hudd, Ken Dodd, Barbara Windsor, Eartha Kitt, Danny La Rue, Hylda Baker, Les Dawson, Larry Grayson, Tommy Steele, Frankie Vaughan, John Inman, Bernard Cribbins and Arthur Askey.

The New Players’ are still producing Music Hall at our old home Under the Arches, Villiers Street now called The Charing Cross Theatre. Also national theatre tours and private functions.

Fun Fact. The Sandy Wilson musical The Boy Friend was first performed by The Players’ in April 1953.
